Prime Video’s Content Creation Platform

With the Developers and Content Operators at right at our side in the SAME building and even the same floor, I was able to quickly gain insights and usability data almost instantly as we worked to launch a new Operator Central that leverages our massive content library. Much of the process was fly by night, manually created with a large risk of user error.
USABILITY TESTING process
I established the teams usability testing process. Originally this team would only perform the Gemba and UAT’s (Usability Acceptance Testing), but it was not a consistently defined process and the variations in results caused skewed results. UAT testing is testing that is done AFTER development happens. I introduced Per-Dev Prototype testing, testing that is done BEFORE development… much less expensive!
ITERATE
Building prototypes and creating a process of Usability testing for this team, I was able to surface the issues and design a prioritization system for video content titles to be managed more efficiently. Creating a system wide error and notification system was key to this platform. Also scalability was hugely considered as we rolled out any feature.
data driven design
Our objective was to redesign the content platform that the Operators (the content curators of Prime Video content) used to curate content in Prime Video experience while including support for live events.
The overriding goal was "Zero Touch" publishing, where all backend content curation would be fully automated, and operators would only need to manage emergency interventions.
EXECUTE
I delivered a comprehensive standards guide for Operator Central. With these standards in place, building out the Live Events devision of Prime Video now has the UX guidelines needed to bring Prime Video into it’s next generation of Content development and all of the legacy software also has the guidelines set in place to continue to roll out features with the standards already realized.
User Experience Standards
My Human Interface Guide had become the central place for all things Operator Central. All Usability testing became consistently archived. All test recordings, and my usability report, to summarize each tests finding, would be stored in Amazon’s WorkDocs. No more tribal knowledge that gets lost in the ashes of the ever changing Prime Video team.

I built this Amazon wiki site to outline the teams processes and create a single source of truth.
I set up the process of individually testing a select group of Operators, and recording the screen sessions of them going through my click-through prototypes.
